Music therapy is a clinical and evidence-based creative arts therapy that is administered by an accredited music therapist to address social, communicative, emotional, physical, cognitive, and spiritual areas of need.
Music therapists are practitioners who are trained in how to purposefully use music and musical interventions to achieve non-musical goals in a wide range of populations. In order to receive accreditation status, Certified Music Therapists graduate from a University music therapy program after successful completion of over 1000 hours of supervised clinical internship.
Some examples of musical activities that are used in session include lyric analysis, songwriting, singing, instrument improvisation, and receptive music listening experiences. Music therapists plan and design sessions, set therapeutic goals and objectives, develop treatment plans, and track client progress through regular documentation.
